We have dusted off plans for a new footway for
part of the High Street in Nailsea.
The proposed path will run between the Tesco store and Nailsea
Park where there is only a grass verge at the moment. The scheme
follows requests from the public and detailed discussions with
local elected members and consultation with those whose land fronts
on to the highway verge.
"These consultations showed that some residents were willing to
make the needed land available, which together with the existing
narrow verge would mean that a 1.8 metre-wide path could be
constructed," said Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, deputy leader, and executive
member for strategic planning. "However, funds are limited and
progress depends on the additional land being provided without
incurring extra costs. Provided the land owners agree it is our
intention to construct the path and mark the boundary with a newly
planted hedge together with a low post and rail fence, otherwise we
will simply surface the highway verge to provide a narrow
path.
"We are writing to the landowners at the moment and if agreed work
will be scheduled in to start in the autumn. This scheme will make
this stretch of road safer for everyone."
The total cost of the work is estimated to be £15,500, £12,000 of
which will come from a Section 106 agreement from Tesco. The rest
of the funding will come from the Local Transport Plan
budget. |
