The first phase of works to improve access to a
North Somerset nature reserve is nearly
complete.
The section of the Strawberry Line Heritage Trail running
between Winscombe and Sandford, has been resurfaced with limestone
chippings.
New gates and cycle and wheelchair friendly access controls have
also been installed.
The work, which has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund,
South West Regional Development Agency, Sustrans and the Mendip
Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, aims to provide walkers,
cyclists, wheelchair users and families with pushchairs easier
access along the 3km heritage site.
Councillor Alan Hockridge, Leader of North Somerset Council,
said: "This work is a fantastic development for the Strawberry Line
Heritage Trail and North Somerset. We hope that residents and
tourists will enjoy the trail and make use of this wonderful
recreation facility."
"The Strawberry Line will be a real asset for the local area,"
explained Ann Harley, local ward councillor for Banwell and
Winscombe. "As well as being an excellent facility for local
people, it will attract visitors who will support local shops,
cafes and pubs and strengthen the rural economy."
Sections of the Line which were previously too narrow for a
shared use trail have been widened and a new ramp has been
constructed giving cyclists direct access to the trail from the
heart of Winscombe.
In future months, the trail will be signed as part of the
National Cycle Network and new benches will be provided at
convenient points.
Andy Mallender, North Somerset Council's Strawberry Line
Heritage Trail Project Officer, said: "This work has made a huge
difference by making it possible to cycle from Yatton to Winscombe.
Several people have told me that they started cycling for the first
time in years because they have such a good trail on their
doorsteps."
