Buy gifts which are long-lasting. Things which
break easily will end up as waste quicker and cannot be reused by
anybody.
Where possible avoid buying (or requesting) presents which rely
on disposable parts, including batteries.
Always look for alternatives, e.g. a coffee maker that uses a
washable filter rather than throwaway paper ones, or a
wind-up/solar powered radio. If you're not sure what to buy, why
not give money or gift vouchers? You can buy them from all sorts of
places including garden centre, high street stores and book shops.
Maybe cinema or theatre tickets could be a nice alternative.
Foods, cheese and wines can also make excellent green Christmas
presents, be careful to consider where the produce was grown and
how far its been transported. North Somerset has many excellent
producers of local
cider, cheese and meats as well as
local markets.
How about buying a gift that will last for a whole year?
Examples include: sponsorship of an animal, membership of an
organisation/society or subscription to a magazine.
