  • How are cartons reprocessed?

The cartons are taken to Swindon where Thamesdown Recycling bale the cartons together. The bales are collected by Lafarge and exported by road and ferry to Sweden. Once in Sweden the cartons are taken to a mill and pulped where they are made into Plasterboard. It is hoped that in the near future that a mill will be constructed in UK.

  • Are there plans to increase the number of carton banks?

The current carton recycling service is provided to us for free by the carton industry body ACE UK. As such they have given us a limited number of collection points. We have been very successful in agreeing six carton collection points, this is more than some London boroughs. With a limited number of collection points, we chose recycling banks that currently recycle the most material rather than their geographical location as we wanted the scheme to be as successful as possible. However we are speaking with the ACE UK to increase the number of sites across the district.

  • Why don't we recycle cartons from the kerbside in the green box?

The current carton recycling service is provided to us for free by the carton industry body ACE UK. If we were to pay for this scheme it would be extremely expensive, our current recycling vehicles have limited space to collect new materials streams, to add carton recycling to the green box we would need to increase council tax by around 2% plus the additional annual cost of collection. We review our recycling services every year and so the situation may change in the future.
