Real nappies

Real nappies are healthier and easier to use than you may think.

If you are interested in real nappies and are a parent, health professional or in the business, we would like you to join our North Somerset Nappy Alliance. It's a new free impartial advice and information network.

Modern real cotton nappies:

  • Are shaped, fitted, and fasten easily with velcro, poppers or ties.
  • Can be used with waterproof covers which hold the nappy in place.
  • Are machine washable in a 60C wash and there is no need for boiling, scrubbing or even soaking.
  • Are fashionable and come in a choice of styles, patterns and sizes. For further information visit our types of real nappies page.
  • Support newborn hips in the best position to aid hip development.
  • Protect tumbling toddlers’ lower spines, cushioning any falls.

Biodegradable paper nappy liners can be used with the cotton nappy and hygienically flushed down the toilet so the waste goes into the sewerage system instead of open rubbish sites.

There is no evidence to support claims that disposables can help prevent nappy rash. Not changing the nappy frequently is the main cause of rashes.

Babies who wear real nappies may be easier to potty train as they are more aware of their bodily functions.
