Composting

Around two thirds of the rubbish you throw away could be composted, which will help your garden and the environment.

National composting week runs from May 3 - 10 and we will be running various  events throughout the district where you can come and find out more about composting.

We are also running a Bin it to win it! competition where you could win £100 worth of garden vouchers if you buy a compost bin.

By putting kitchen and garden waste into a compost bin or garden heap you can produce a nutritious all-in-one plant food, soil conditioner and mulch for your:
garden
allotment
window box, or,
potted plants.

This section has details of how to get startedbuying a compost bin, what you should put in it, top tips, wormeries composting cooked food waste and advice on how to make the best compost and what to do once you have created compost.

Composting saves waste from being put into landfill and cuts down the need to buy fertilisers and peat-based products.  This is good for the environment, as most commercial compost comes from peat bogs which support rare plants and animals, but it also saves you money when you make your own compost.

You could also download our how to be a rotter leaflet which is full of useful tips on home composting.
