what can be recycled FAQs

You can recycle many items through your kerbside collections or at your nearest recycling facility.

Items that can be recycled in your food waste collection:

  • cooked and raw food including bones
  • dairy products
  • vegetables and fruits including peelings* 
  • egg shells*
  • pet food 
  • paper towels and tissues* 
  • tea bags and coffee grounds*

Items that can be recycled in your green garden waste bag:

  • grass cuttings and prunings
  • flowers, leaves, plants and weeds
  • hedge and conifer clippings
  • twigs and tree branches of a maximum 10cm (4.5") diameter

Items that can be recycled in your recycling box:

  • aerosols
    Ensure that it is completely empty and do not pierce, crush or flatten the cans but do detach any loose or easily removable parts such as the lid.
  • batteries
    All household batteries can be recycled in your recycling box.
  • cardboard
    Including corrugated, printed, thin (eg: cereal boxes, kitchen/toilet roll tubes, ready meal sleeves, greetings cards without glitter or novelties).
  • cartons
    Including drinks, food, fruit juice, soup and Tetra Pak cartons.
  • glass bottles and jars
    Please wash the bottles and jars and put the lids and caps loose in the green box
  • metal
    Including aluminium foil, food and drinks cans, metal lids from jars, tins and trays and wine screw tops.
  • mobile phones
  • paper
    Including brochures, catalogues, envelopes, magazine, newspapers, telephone directories, wrapping paper, Yellow Pages.
  • plastic
    All types of rigid white, coloured or opaque plastic, polyethylene terephthalate, high density polyethylene or polypropylene. We can not accept black plastic of any type, or non-rigid expanded or foam types of plastic.
  • spectacles
  • textiles
    Including all types of shoes (tied in pairs), bedding, curtains, cloths, clothes, rags, rugs and mats and towels. Make sure the items are clean, dry and bagged separately

Items that can be recycled at a recycling centre:

All items collected from your kerbside recycling box can also be taken to a recycling centre. You can also take waste electrical equipment to the centres.

We can accept these items in restricted quantities:

  • cement bonded asbestos: two sheets per visit or per week, whichever is less. This must be double wrapped in thick polythene sheeting and fully sealed with strong tape, or in thick plastic sacks in small pieces
  • car tyres: five per visit or per week whichever is less
  • fire extinguisher: one domestic size per visit or per week, whichever is less
  • propane or butane gas 15KG bottles: one per visit or per week, whichever is less
  • soil and rubble: five standard size (80 litre) refuse bags per visit or per week, whichever is less
