refuse (non-recyclable waste) FAQs

We provide a refuse (non-recyclable waste) collection service from the kerbside of your property.

How often is my refuse collected?

Refuse is collected fortnightly. Find out your collection dates online. Please leave your wheeled bin or sacks on the edge of your property nearest the road by 7am on your day of collection.

How do you collect my refuse?

Most properties in North Somerset are given a wheeled bin, however some properties are given a supply of sacks to use instead. You must present your refuse for collection in the containers that we provide.

I've just moved in and don't have a wheeled bin, where can I get one?

If you're a new resident, you can request a wheeled bin online.

Is there a limit to how much waste I can leave out for collection?

There is no limit to the amount of recycling you can leave out for collection, but we do limit the amount of refuse. The lid of your wheeled bin must be closed with no additional sacks left by it.

I have too much waste to fit in my bin, what can I do?

Make sure you recycle as much of your waste as possible. Read our what can be recycled FAQs and think about the things you're throwing away, and if it is possible to reduce or re-use them. For example: when buying food, buy the products with less packaging.

I have a large family, is it possible to have a bigger bin?

Yes, if you have six or more people in the household or children in nappies, we will assess your need for a bigger bin and give you advice on how to make the most of your recycling collections. To request an assessment for a bigger wheeled bin, contact our streets and open spaces team.

My wheeled bin hasn't been returned or is damaged, can I have another one?

Yes, you can report that your wheeled bin is missing or damaged online. You'll need to place the damaged bin outside your property for our crews to collect and you'll receive a replacement within 10 working days.

What if my wheeled bin is lost or stolen?

You can request a replacement wheeled bin online. Crews will then deliver the replacement bin to your property within 10 working days.

My refuse hasn't been collected, will you come back for it?

If you think your waste should've been collected but it wasn't, your can report a missed collection online, within 48 hours of your collection being due. We will then come back and collect it.

Will I be told why my refuse wasn't collected?

Crews leave a tag on any wheeled bin or sack that couldn't be collected to explain why.

I live over a shop and some of my rubbish has been left behind, why is this?

Special arrangements apply to rubbish from buildings which are part-commercial and part-domestic. We will supply standard containers for your domestic waste and explain how to use them. Any other rubbish is treated as commercial waste which you must pay to have collected.

I'm elderly or disabled and struggle to put my wheeled bin out for collection, can I get help?

Yes, firstly we will offer you a smaller bin if that would make it easier for you, otherwise we can arrange for you to have an assisted collection.

How big are the bins?

Properties that have enough outside space to store a wheeled bin will receive a 180 litre bin, approximately 45cm wide, 72cm deep and 1.7m high.

How many plastic sacks will I receive if I can’t have a wheeled bin?

You will receive two rolls of plastic sacks every six months – there are enough sacks for you to present four bags every other week.

I have run out of the plastic sacks that you provided – what do I do?

We only issue rolls of plastic sacks once every six months. If you run out of sacks before your next six monthly delivery you will need to take your refuse to your nearest recycling centre to dispose of it.

Can I use my own black bin bags instead of the plastic sacks that you've given me?

No. We will only collect rubbish that is presented in North Somerset Council branded plastic sacks.  If you have been given a wheeled bin you are welcome to use black bin bags or other carrier bags in the bin.

Can I put out more than four plastic sacks every other week?

If you put out more than four plastic sacks every other week, you will run out before your next six monthly delivery and will need to take your refuse to your nearest recycling centre. We will not collect refuse that is in plastic sacks or bags that we haven’t given you.

I have lost the sacks you issued to me, will you replace them?

We will replace them in genuine cases and will monitor the number of requests from each property, contact our streets and open spaces team.

Occasionally I have a lot of refuse, is there somewhere I can dispose of it?

Yes, you can take it to your nearest recycling centre.

I have some large bulky items, will you collect them?

Yes, we will collect large items for a fee, contact our streets and open spaces team for details. You could also look check your telephone directory or search online for other service providers, but be sure to check that they are a licenced waste carrier.

What items should I put in my wheeled bin?
