We are the lead authority for managing flood risk in
North Somerset.
Weston
Village lake to help prevent flooding?
A long term vision to create homes and employment in
Weston-super-Mare could also create a huge lake as part of a major
scheme to prevent flooding as much of the land in the Weston
Villages development, lies within an area of flood risk.
On 13 March 2012 we held a public information session about
the proposals at the Campus, Locking Castle.
The Flood and
Water Management Act 2010 and the
EU flood Risk Regulations 2009
gives us new responsibilities as a
Lead Local Flood Authority
(LLFA) to take the lead in coordinating flood risk
management in North Somerset.
As part of this new responsibility we have produced
a Preliminary Flood Risk
Assessment report (pdf, Jul 11, 2.3MB) with further
technical detail contained within
PFRA Annex 2 (pdf, Jul 11 28KB). The
report is based on historical flood records and local
knowledge to identify areas most at risk of
flooding from surface water and ordinary watercourses
(ditches, dykes, streams, lakes and small reservoirs). Whilst
this report provides an indication of the areas
most at risk of flooding, it should not be used to
identify individual property flood risk. You can also view our
flood
risk asset register.
The Environment Agency has the
responsibility of managing flooding from rivers and the
sea.
A Surface Water Management Plan for Weston-super-Mare has
recently been produced, which identifies flood management
solutions in the town. A Strategic Flood Risk
Assessment (SFRA) has been prepared to help us when
considering flood risk as a planning issue.
The information
contained within these reports will be used to develop
our Local Flood Risk Management Strategy, which we have a duty
to produce as a LLFA. This strategy will set out our long term
plan to manage flood risk (involving flooding from surface water,
ordinary watercourses and groundwater) across North Somerset. We
hope to have this strategy developed by Summer 2012.
We are working in partnership with other flood risk
authorities including the Environment Agency; North Somerset
Levels Internal Drainage Board and
Wessex Water to develop the Local
Flood Risk Management Strategy and progress the work identified
by the previous studies mentioned above.
