The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2004 are the
most detailed way of looking at where the most deprived areas
across the country are located.
The information was published by the Office of the Deputy Prime
Minister in April 2004.
In previous studies on deprivation the results were reported at
ward level but this hid smaller pockets of deprivation within
wards.
Therefore, the country was split in 2004 into smaller
geographical areas for the first time with these areas
called super output areas.
There are 124 super output areas in North Somerset and
32,482 across the UK.
On average around 1,500 people live in each one with each area
score on the following seven deprivation themes or domains:
- Barriers to housing and services
- Crime
- Education
- Employment
- Health
- Income
- Living environment
These areas were then ranked from 1 - for the most deprived
- through to to 32,482 - for the least deprived.
The following maps show the scores and ranks for each theme and
give a clear picture of where the most and least deprived areas
across the district are located:
