A large
amount of background work has been undertaken on the future of
Weston. A number of studies have helped to inform and shape the
current plans for the town.
Weston
Area Development Framework 2005
This document was
funded by the South West Regional Development Agency, English
Partnerships and North Somerset Council.
It provided
strategic guidance on the range of measures to be pursued, aimed at
capitalising on the substantial opportunities identified for
economic regeneration and expansion; addressing the area's economic
under-performance in recent years and re-positioning the town as a
focus for growth within the West of England sub-region.
The proposals are
aimed at the regeneration of the whole of the town through
employment-led investment and exemplary mixed use development
The Final Report
was completed in 2005 but was superseded by new planning
legislation that required such plans to be taken through the
statutory planning
process:
Weston Area Action Plan 2006
Arups were
commissioned in 2006 to undertake work on the Weston Area Action
Plan.
The original
Weston AAP covered Weston-super-Mare town centre, seafront and the
land around the old Weston Airfield and RAF Locking sites within
the Weston Regeneration Area.
It became apparent
during the Weston AAP's preparation that because it covered such a
large area different issues were emerging between the town centre
and the Weston Regeneration Area.
An
Overarching Report was produced as part of
the Weston AAP Issues and Options Stage backed up by these seven
baseline evidence reports:
Following these reports the Weston Regeneration Area AAP
Issues and Options consultation was undertaken and this culminated
in the publication of a Draft Preferred Options Report
.
Weston Town Centre AAP
The Weston Town Centre AAP will cover the established, built-up
areas in need of selective regeneration requiring a site-by-site
approach including the town centre, seafront and gateway
areas.
Birnbeck Pier and Island are significant sites in
Weston-super-Mare and their redevelopment is a key element in the
regeneration of the town. The pier, island and headland were
purchased in September 2006 by a property development company who
specialise in urban regeneration projects -
Urban Splash.
A further
Issues and Options consultation was undertaken
specifically for the Town Centre AAP in October 2007 alongside
the Core
Strategy Issues and Options.
