The Weston Villages proposals are for two new
communities accommodating around 5,500 new dwellings on the
outskirts of Weston-super-Mare focussed on the former Weston
Airfield and RAF Locking.
The
location, broad scale and principles of development is
set out in the
Adopted Core Strategy. To make sure that it is planned
comprehensively as a sustainable development a
draft Weston Villages Supplementary Planning
Document (pdf, Aug 11, 1MB) has been prepared. Key
principles include:
-
Putting
employment first to ensure new housing is balanced with sufficient
employment opportunities.
-
a masterplan-led
approach to development
-
community
building
-
Making sure that
development is correctly phased along with the infrastructure
needed to support it including tranport, schools, and open
spaces
-
A suitable mix
of housing that is well designed
-
the need to
protect and enhance the existing features of value in the
area
-
The Supplementary
Planning Document will help us determine planning applications
and will show how Weston will develop over the next 20
years. A public consultation took place from
Thursday 1 September to Wednesday 12 October 2011. The
responses from this will inform ongoing work on the SPD before it
is Adopted in 2012.
Background
work
During earlier
stages of the planning of this development, consultancy Broadway
Malyan were commissioned to prepare a
Master Plan (pdf, Apr 10,
12.2MB), Delivery Plan (pdf, Aug 09,
7MB) and a Design Code (pdf, Apr 10,
15.6MB) for the area. This has informed the
development of the Supplementary Planning Document although this
was based on the Regional Spatial Strategy. This included
an analysis of the
Environmental and Development
Context (pdf, Apr 10, 21.3MB).
This builds on a
large amount of
backgound work
already done looking
at the future of Weston.
