The Joint Replacement Structure Plan provides a
strategic framework for North Somerset.
Its guiding principle is sustainable environmental, economic and
social development and sets out a strategy for the location of
development.
This prioritises previously used land and urban areas for
major development and promotes strategic transport
improvements.
The Structure Plan was adopted
in September 2002 and prepared jointly with
Bath and North East
Somerset
(BANES), Bristol
City
and South Gloucestershire
councils. A guidance note has been prepared to detail the
Structure Plan Policies remaining in
force following the enactment of the Planning and
Compulsory Purchase Act 2004.
It was prepared in accordance with
Regional Planning Guidance (RPG10) which
oultined a vision for planning for the entire South West region
and was to have been replaced by the new
Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West. These documents
were however revoked by the coalition government in May 2010.
It should be noted that the Plan's Policy 37 (Gypsy and
Traveller sites) has been quashed following a legal challenge.
Therefore, this policy is no longer part of
the Adopted Structure Plan and supporting
paragraph 4.49 is no longer relevant.
The Court of Appeal judgement can be obtained from
the West of England Partnership website
which can also provide further information on the Joint
Replacement Structure Plan.
