The Portishead public art project is based around the
Port Marine development.
Port Marine is a groundbreaking development combining the local
landscape and public art into a unique living and working
environment in Portishead.
It was a ten year programme to regenerate a dockside location
which began in 1999 and has brought together architects, urban
designers, artists and local communities.
The aim was to create a unique identity for the town. The impact
of the development is wide - there are leisure facilities, new
primary schools, a secondary school, library, and an extension to
the new High Street, including a new supermarket and medical
centre.
The Port Marine site has a long history of industrial use as a
nail factory, a phosphorous works and latterly a power station. The
old dock has extensive views over the Bristol Channel to Wales and
the new Severn Bridge.
