Our multi-million pound seafront enhancement
project in Weston-super-Mare continues to be showered with
awards.
This time the scheme has won the prestigious Royal Town Planning
Institute (RTPI) South West award.
The £34m seafront enhancements project, which includes the sea
defences, promenade enhancements and Princess Royal Square, was up
against 20 other submissions from around the South West. Judges
said the overall standard was the highest ever and the judging
panel was faced with very difficult decisions.
Jean Marshall, the RTPI SW Chair, said: "The judges were very
impressed with your submission and resolved that it should be the
Award Winner in the ‘Schemes on the Ground’ category. Moreover, the
judging panel decided that it should be the overall winner of the
RTPI SW Planning Achievement Awards 2011."
The RTPI award also recognises the contribution the project has
had on stimulating wider regeneration in the town.
Weston's scheme fought off stiff competition from projects such
as Bath's Southgate development and Gloucester city centre's docks
development.
Deputy leader and executive member for planning, Cllr Elfan Ap
Rees, said: "This is fantastic recognition from a top professional
town planning body and demonstrates the quality of the schemes
achieved in Weston-super-Mare over the last four years.
"We get lots of positive comments from residents and visitors
and to have this backed up by continuing industry recognition is a
real testament to the hard work of all involved in the
design, development and implementation of the project and the
excellent working relationships built up by our officers with the
contractors. It also is excellent publicity for the town."
This latest award comes hot on the heels of the RTPI President's
visit to the resort last week. Richard Summers visited Weston as
part of his tour of the South West to view the seafront
enhancements and regeneration work that we have been
undertaking over recent years.
During his visit, Mr Summers met with senior planning and
regeneration officers and toured Weston’s famous promenade to find
out more about the transformed seafront and new public open space,
Princess Royal Square.
Other awards that have been bestowed on the seafront
enhancements include those from the Institute of Civil Engineers,
the Concrete Society, the Considerate Constructors, the Association
of Consulting Engineers, the 2011 Street Design Awards and the
Worshipful Company of Paviors.
