Residents are being asked for their views on how new
housing can be developed in villages without adding to
out-commuting.
We are consulting on our draft supplementary planning document
(SPD) relating to housing in defined villages.
This provides guidelines on how to use part of the North
Somerset Replacement Local Plan, which allows new housing in
villages which have defined settlement limits, providing that the
housing does not add to out-commuting.
The SPD does this by detailing the council's requirements for
live/work accommodation, age-restricted housing and other forms of
housing that seek to avoid out-commuting, either because the
occupiers work on-site or because they do not work at
all.
It continues to allow affordable housing in villages as an
exception to normal planning policies, where this would meet local
need.
Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, executive member with responsibility for
strategic planning said this was a great opportunity for people to
help shape the future of their communities.
"None of us want to see homes built in our precious villages
that are just going to be used for out commuters wanting a lovely
place to live. We need any new development to form a vital part of
the community, either by creating important work opportunities or
by providing homes for people who will contribute to village
life."
The consultation draft of the SPD and supporting documents can
be viewed at local libraries or online through our
SPD
consultation draft section.
The consultation period closes on 13 April.
