Firework retailers are being warned to make sure they
store these dangerous explosives safely.
By law, anyone selling fireworks must make sure they are kept
properly to reduce the risk of accidents and fires.
Our Trading Standards Service and Health and Safety
officers have teamed up to make sure the rules are
followed.
The two teams will be inspecting premises in North Somerset to
ensure all the necessary precautions are taken when storing
explosives in shops and outlets.
Executive member responsible for consumer protection, Cllr Carl
Francis-Pester, said: “Unlike other products, shopkeepers have to
treat fireworks with special care to protect people from the
consequences of a fire or explosion.
“They have a duty to carry out a risk assessment and act upon
the findings. Our officers are carrying out a programme of
inspections and will enforce the law.
“Anyone who is concerned about the safety and storage of
explosives, or the sale of adult fireworks to underage youngsters,
should contact Trading Standards on 01275 888 634.”
The inspections are part of the ongoing work of the Crime and
Disorder Task Group which aims to prevent anti-social behaviour in
the district.
Around Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night complaints about
anti-social behaviour, including those involving fireworks, can
increase. The task group is aiming to reduce this illegal behaviour
by targeting the cause.
Fireworks, which go on sale on 15 October, can only be released
until 11pm, with an extension to midnight on 5
November.
