Residents are being thanked for their efforts after a
record breaking 64% of waste was recycled in
September.
Latest figures show that last month, a staggering 4328 tonnes of
waste were recycled at the kerbside. This compares with 3714
tonnes for the same month in 2010.
The new recycling revolution waste services were introduced in
North Somerset last summer and have really taken off since
then.
The amount of waste sent to landfill in the first six months of
this year was 19,432 tonnes compared with 27,555 tonnes in the
first six months of 2010. This is a drop of 30%.
Cllr Peter Bryant, executive member with responsibility for
waste, said the latest figure was a fantastic achievement.
"North Somerset residents are doing a brilliant job and we would
like to thank them for all their efforts. We are now one of the
best performing unitary authorities in the country when it comes to
recycling and this is a credit to all households.
"I can't allow this opportunity to go by without giving full
credit to the 31 recycling teams who hit the streets daily to
collect our recycling. They truly are the ambassadors of the
service and are greatly appreciated by North Somerset Council.
Without their dedication and support we could not possibly achieve
these superb results."
He added: "Recycling rates are up, waste sent to landfill is
down and the new recycling and waste services are saving money. In
these testing financial times, this is a winning formula for both
the council and our tax payers.
After lessons learned from last year's severe weather, North
Somerset Council has put plans in place for any disruption caused
by adverse weather to recycling and waste collections this
year.
More information for residents about these arrangements is in
this month's North Somerset Life magazine and will soon be on the
council's website at
