Vote for Uphill Hill

Date: 07/05/2009

Uphill Hill has been named as the South West’s winner in ‘Warburtons Picnic Awards 2009’. It has now won a place in the national final to battle it out against nine other favourite picnic sites from around the UK for the prestigious title of ‘Warburtons Best Picnic Spot 2009’.

Hundreds of picnic-goers have cast their vote for their favourite local picnic spot to help Uphill Hill fight off stiff competition from other sites across the region, including Alexandra Park in Bath and Kynance Cove in Cornwall who earned second and third place respectively in the regional heat.

For winning the regional heat, Uphill Hill will be presented with a £500 cash bursary from Warburtons. If the South West’s favourite goes on to be voted the nation’s top picnic site, not only will it receive a further £500 cash bursary, it will also be presented with a Warburtons Picnic Award plaque.

Uphill Hill is owned by the council. It is a Local Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the proud holder of the prestigious Green Flag award.

“The fact that Uphill Hill has been recognised as the South West’s favourite picnic spot is a tribute to the local volunteers who help us look after the site,” said deputy leader Cllr Elfan Ap Rees.

“The careful management and maintenance of the site is a real team effort. Thanks to this Uphill Hill is a beauty spot which everyone can enjoy. I am delighted it has won the regional heat and would now urge everyone to vote for it in the national final.”

David Scott, manager of Warburtons South West depot, said: “Congratulations to Uphill and to all of our regional finalists! Uphill Hill is a beautiful site, with glorious views of the South West’s countryside and coastline.

“The Warburtons Picnic Awards 2009 are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate one of our great British traditions. With more of us holidaying in the UK this year, there’s never been a better time to unearth some of the hidden treasures across Britain.”
