We are responsible for identifying contaminated land in
North Somerset and tackling the problems it causes.
It is identified as any land which is causing or could
cause potentially significant harm to human health, controlled
waters and ecosystems.
As a result we have been asked by the Government to clean it
up across the district.
We have outlined our plans to alleviate the problem in our
downloadable
Contaminated Land Strategy.
Remediation of contaminated sites in North Somerset is secured via
the following mechanisms:
- Through redevelopment
The planning process enables us to ensure the undertaking of
appropriate investigation at any potentially contaminated site
which is subject to redevelopment or any change of land use
requiring planning permission.
- Through the enforcement of EPA 1990
The legislation enables us to enforce remediation to be undertaken
by appropriate persons at problematic contaminated sites which are
not proactively dealt with by other means.
For details of costs visit our
fees and charges page.
We also hold and maintain a
contaminated land public
register which identifies the location of these
sites.
The register is available to view at the
Town
Hall in Weston-super-Mare or you can order a copy from
us.
