Air pollution and quality

We monitor, review and assess emissions and air quality to conform to government standards across North Somerset.

This includes emissions from industrial premises, local traffic and those from air handling units and air-conditioning and venitlation systems.

We also monitor the air emitted from part B industrial processes from places such as quarries, petrol stations and waste oil burners.

To find out about the current state of the air across the district download our Air Quality Report 2008.

For information about the previous situation you can download our earlier reports:

The Environment Agency is responsible for policing emissions from part A industrial processes including industries using large volumes of solvents.

There are currently three of these operations in North Somerset with a public register available for inspection.

Legislation also exists under the Clean Air Act 1993 covering the height of chimneys which serve furnaces. We do not enforce these laws as there are no such premises in North Somerset.
