There are historic sites and buildings across North
Somerset which are an integral part of the everyday
environment we experience and enjoy.
This built heritage not only enhances the character of our
district but plays a vital role in the sustainable regeneration
of our local economy and environment.
To ensure these examples of our most architecturally and
historically interesting buildings are protected for future
generations they can be listed by
the Department for Culture, Media
and Sport.
Legislation covers any plans to demolish, extend or to
alter listed buildings externally or internally and
applies to the 1,250 Listed
Buildings we have in the district.
It is often possible to alter these buildings provided their
architectural and historical aspects are respected but any such
proposals are controlled under the
Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act
1990.
We also have 35
Conservation Areas
which we have designated as places of special architectural
and historical interest.
We have decided these areas have a character or
appearance which we want to preserve or enhance and
they are protected from development by the same legislation as
listed buildings.
They provide a broader form of protection and recognise
the quality of our townscapes in their wider sense.
