We give advice on the effects of planning on the
archaeological and historic landscape of North
Somerset.
We offer this service to the public and
the planning officers and elected council members who
make the final decisions on any planning applications.
We maintain the district's Historic Environment Record (HER) which
maps out over 8000 known archaeological and historic
sites.
We check planning applications against the HER and
other information we hold to see whether any planning
proposals will affect these places.
Our other information includes an archive of around 15,000
aerial photographs and the local Schedule of Ancient Monuments
which contains a record of nationally important sites entitled to
special governmental statutory protection.
We also provide advice and training to universities, colleges,
schools, local groups and bodies and liaise with external
organisations to ensure North Somerset benefits from national and
international experience.
