School Security

The Governing Body has a responsibility to provide a safe working environment for staff, pupils, parents and visitors to the school.

It is a good practice to undertake a risk assessment of the security of the premises and consider security when planning/carrying out building schemes.  For further advice please contact the Property Governance Team.

The DfES booklet  Managing School Facilities: Improving School Security gives guidance on various security issues.

Once a development has been completed, the main opportunity to incorporate crime prevention measures has gone.  Secured by Design (SBD) is a Police initiative to encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in development design to assist in reducing the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime, creating a safer and more secure environment.

Further advice regarding the 'designing out of crime' can be found on the Secured by Design web site.  Schools should also consult with, and obtain advice about security from their Area Crime Prevention Officer via the local police station.
