Secured by Design (SBD) is a police initiative to
encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures
in development design.
This helps to assist in reducing the opportunity for
crime and the fear of crime, creating a safer and more secure
environment.
Once a development has been completed, the main opportunity to
incorporate crime prevention measures has gone.
It is the responsibility of the client (School Governors, LEA
Boards etc) to instruct the architectural practice or developer to
liaise with the police ALO/CPDA, at the sketch scheme
stage.
This will allow the designer to incorporate advice at the
earliest opportunity, rather than make adjustments at the planning
application stage, which often results in delays.
We would like to encourage this and advise all schools,
consultants and contractors to view the
Secured by Design document, to consider
where possible any proposals that could be implemented that may
reduce the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime.
PC Paul Morris, Crime Prevention Design Adviser, on 01934 638

or discuss any queries or suggestions on how this can be
implemented in North Somerset
'Secured by Design' is endorsed by the Association of Chief
Police Officers (ACPO), and has the backing of the Home Office
Crime Reduction Unit. It has been drawn up in consultation
with the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions
(DTLR).
