Clerk to the governors

The governing body must appoint a clerk and it is recommended that they provide a full job description at the time of appointment.

Governors, associate members and the head teacher of the school cannot be appointed as clerk to the governing body.

The governing body will need to calculate the number of hours to be worked over the year.  If they take into account the tasks to be carried out before, during and after the meeting, an appropriate estimate might be 10 hours per full governing body meeting.  This might be shorter for committee meetings.

There is no definitive hourly rate for North Somerset clerks and the rates vary between schools.  It is up to the governing body to set the appropriate fee.  Comparative information from other local authorities indicate hourly rates vary from £8.99 to £11.40 per hour as of 2008.

The clerk should be paid as a supplier on FMS6.  The clerk to the governors fees form can be used as a template for this purpose
