Advice for children and young people

We understand that bullying can cause you long lasting upset. We would like you to know that you are not alone. This page gives you advice on how to overcome bullying.

You must not let bullying ruin your life. There are many people who would want to help you if they knew how you were feeling.

If you think you are being bullied you should:

  • Tell someone you trust – such as a teacher, parent or friend
  • Tell somebody else in your community if they don’t help you
  • Remember – it’s not your fault - no one deserves to be bullied
  • Think about when and where it happens, and try to avoid these places
  • Keep a record of times and places that it happens
  • Make sure you tell somebody before you go there, so that they know that you feel at risk and can help to keep you safe
  • Never respond to nasty texts or emails that you have received and always save them for evidence
  • Check your school’s anti-bullying policy. This will tell you what your school should be doing to stop bullying
  • Try to act more confidently – even if you don’t feel it

You must not retaliate to bullying, or you may get into trouble yourself. Adults can deal with the bullies for you. They cannot do anything unless you tell them. They will discuss with you how they can make the bullying stop.
