Bullying

North Somerset Children & Young People's Services Directorate is committed to providing equality in our schools, free from racism, bullying or discrimination of any kind.

Bullying causes harm to those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who watch. Bullying is never acceptable. Our aim is to break the chain of bullying.

Bullying is:

  • Deliberately hurtful
  • Repeated over time
  • Uses an imbalance of power (this may be related to physical, social or emotional status)

Bullying can be:

  • Physical: pushing, kicking, hitting, damaging property
  • Verbal: name calling, taunting, teasing, intimidating, humiliating, gossiping
  • Silent: isolation, rude gestures, exclusion from activities
  • Electronic: via mobile phones and computers (cyberbullying)

Cyberbullying: is different from other forms of bullying. A single incident can be called bullying:

  • Due to its permanent place in cyberspace.
  • The impact from one malicious entry can spread worldwide and its consequences may be infinite.
  • It invades personal space and time.

The Department for Education have published the Safe to Learn: Embedding anti bullying work in schools.

North Somerset is a member of The Anti Bullying Alliance and The South West Grid for Learning

Guidance documents and leaflets can be found on our guidance and factsheets page. A document entitled Anti-Bullying Guidance for Schools has recently been issued by the National Healthy Schools Programme.
