More than 27,000 schoolchildren are taken to
school in cars and in buses across North Somerset every
day.
This is due to increasing car ownership and dependency and
general fears over road and public safety for children.
This has created longer home to school journeys and means fewer
children are walking and cycling to their
classrooms.
As a result school travel planning is becoming an increasingly
important local transport issue.
Our priorities include creating safer journeys using sustainable
transport and reducing road congestion in a bid to find a balance
between the need to travel and to improve our quality of life.
Free school information packs are available and we offer help
and advice to anyone involved in the home to school journey.
We can help you develop a school travel plan and provide
guidance in dealing with local agencies and in co-ordinating your
working group.
We can also help with a range of initiatives including the
following:
- Arranging an initial visit to your school
- Organising site surveys
- Preparing research
- Consulting with engineers
- Liaising with our education and road safety departments
- Reporting to school governors
- Advising on school travel plan documents
