Work experience is an important part of school
children's education as it allows them to learn about the world of
work.
It gives them an experience of working life and the skills
needed for an occupation they may want to follow.
Pupils in the last two years of compulsory schooling, from the
start of Y10, can take part in work experience.
As far as possible students should undertake real tasks to give
them an idea of the work carried out by an employer.
They should learn how the company is organised and should gain an
understanding of how enterprise, creativity and innovation help
business growth.
A programme should be organised for each pupil with employers
monitoring their progress.
Each pupil should have a work experience logbook to record their
progress and employers can help by completing the employer
assessment section.
Parents and guardians can offer valuable support in finding
placements and their written consent is needed.
They will have information about the arrangements and will know how
to contact the school if their child reports any problems.
They will be asked to provide medical information which could
affect the health, safety and welfare of their child whilst on a
work placement.
