Litter is rubbish which has been left in the wrong place
rather than in a bin.
This usually means it has been left lying around your
school field, in a classroom or on the pavements in the
streets surrounding your school.
This makes these places look untidy and
can attract rats and flies, pollute the environment
and harm wildlife.
Not all litter is left by pupils and some of it may be
blown in from outside your school grounds.
It is very important everyone learns how to dispose of
their waste without creating litter and causing the
problems it does.
It is also important to remember that your school must be
litter-free if you are to win an
Eco-Schools Green
Flag award.
If litter is a problem in your school and you decide to
concentrate on it as an Eco-Schools theme, you could consider
taking part in one of the following projects:
- Carrying out a litter survey to measure the scale of the
problem and repeat this process to monitor your clean-up
progress
- Raising awareness about litter to remind people to put
their rubbish in a bin
- Positioning bins where litter is a problem and making them
more visible
The Eco-Schools
Programme is run by the environmental
charity Keep Britain Tidy which
can help you tackle litter in your school through its online
School Litter Knowledge Bank.
We are responsible for installing and maintaining
litter
bins across North Somerset and if there are not enough in
your area or they need to be
emptied contact
Streets and Open Spaces.
