What we eat has a huge impact on our health and on
our environment.
The types and quantities of food you eat can have a huge affect
on your health.
For example, if you eat too many fatty foods you could
end up overweight or if you don't eat enough Vitamin C
it can make it easier for you to catch a cold.
Where your food comes from and is produced can also seriously
affect our environment.
Locally produced food doesn't have so far to travel to
reach your table and uses less energy than imported goods and is
therefore better for the environment.
Also locally produced food helps your local economy
because the money you pay for it helps to keep local people
employed and creates profits for local companies.
If your school decides to concentrate
on healthy
living as an Eco-Schools theme, you could ask
yourself the following questions about the food you eat:
- What proportion of my recommended daily intake of nutrients and
energy, such as salt, fat and calories, does it
contain?
- Where does it come from and how many miles has it
travelled?
- How much waste and packaging does it produce?
- Was it farmed using sustainable methods?
- Were producers paid a fair price for the goods?
