A delivery of 500 pocket trumpets has marked the start
of an enormous enhancement to our Music Service's already excellent
Wider Opportunities Programme.
The programme already offers every school with Key Stage 2
pupils two free whole class instrumental tuition workshops every
week. This means that every pupil should have the opportunity
to learn an instrument free of charge for at least one year during
their Key Stage 2 career.
Already this has meant thousands of children have had the
opportunity to learn a musical instrument who otherwise may never
have done so. However, so far they have only had the use of an
instrument during their lessons.
Over the next few years a new initiative will provide every
child with an instrument to use throughout their Wider
Opportunities experience. That means they can take it home
between lessons, and do lots and lots of practice!
New partnership working with Sing Up!
Working with the new national organisation Sing
Up! our Music Service has a range of initiatives underway
to raise the profile of singing amongst young people.
These included a project to empower the older children in
Primary Schools to lead singing and music games in the playground,
an enhanced level of support with singing in the classroom and a
huge event in the Winter Gardens last April that brought together
hundreds of young people to enjoy a day of singing.
Details on these projects and others in the pipeline will be
published soon.
