We cannot always guarantee schools in North
Somerset will be able to accept all the children who would like to
attend them.
This is often because there is simply not enough room for
all of them.
If we refuse you a place at a North Somerset school or on behalf of
the governors of a voluntary aided school we will provide you with
information on how to appeal against the decision.
With the letter of refusal we will include information about how to
appeal, where to send your appeal and a form which you may use to
give the reasons for your appeal.
Parents or carers of children starting school or transferring to
junior or secondary school who are refused their preferred
school may be able to appeal online with details provided in their
letter of refusal.
Appeals for infant classes are sometimes more complicated
because of the legal limit of 30 children in a reception, year 1
and year 2 classes.
We will tell you more about this if it affects the school for
which you are refused a place.
We will include an informative appeal procedures guide
explain the following:
- How the appeal will be conducted
- The kinds of information you may wish to present
- Who the members of an independent panel might be
- How a decision is reached
- The outcome of your appeal
Please note that the need to organise a hearing with an
independent panel can take a little time.
