Chaperone service FAQs

What are the responsibilities of a chaperone?

A chaperone is in loco parentis which means they acts as a good parent and must have the welfare of the children they are chaperoning as their paramount concern.

How do I to apply to be a chaperone?

Please contact our Assistant Locality Leader Jan Harper Shea (jan.harper-shea@n-somerset.gov.uk) who will arrange for all information to be sent to you. Chaperones can be men or women.

Are chaperones security checked?

All chaperone applicants are security checked through the Criminal Records Bureau. However, there is a charge for this service.

Do you interview chaperones?

There is an informal interview process which lasts about 20 minutes covering health and safety and other child welfare matters.

Training ?

All Chaperones are required to complete Safeguarding training. Details on Application. 

What happens after I’m approved as a chaperone?

If your chaperone application is approved you will receive an identity card. Each chaperone is also given a letter of authorisation.

Can a chaperone authorisation be withdrawn?

Yes - if we are concerned about a chaperone in any way.
