Children who are thirteen and over are allowed to work
part-time, outside the school day.
However, there are strict conditions laid down in law so that
children are safeguarded from exploitation and risks to their
health and safety. The child's welfare is paramount.
If you are an employer who wants to employ school age children,
or you are a parent of a child who wants a part time job, please
read the factsheets:
These factsheets provides you with all the relevant
information about types of jobs allowed, hours of work, rest
periods, risk assessments and so on.
There is also a
Child Employment Application Form together
with North Somerset Byelaws (page 2 of the application
form) which govern child employment in this
authority. Both prospective employer and
parent/carer need to complete and sign this form.
The child's attendance at school is always checked when a child
employment application form is received, and a work permit is
unlikely to be issued if the child's attendance is
unsatisfactory.
The work permit, once issued, will be sent to the employer with
copies for parent/carer and school.
