Looked after children

We are committed to removing barriers to achievement for children and young people in care.

Levels of educational achievement among children in care tend to be much lower than that of their peers.

We aim to narrow the gap by providing the educational support to help them maximise their potential.

In line with recommendations from the Department for Education, our work to promote the educational achievement of children in care is part of a wider strategy to achieve better outcomes for this group of young people as a whole.

The Team

The team consists of an advisory teacher, a Senior Education Welfare Officer and a Senior Educational Psychologist, a Headteacher Virtual School (Primary), and a Headteacher Virtual School (Secondary).  We work closely with schools, foster carers and social workers to support the education of children in care.

Useful Documents

We have made a number of useful documents available for download.

In September 2005, the Education Directorate merged with Social Services to become a corporate body: Children and Young People's Services. The guidance in raising achievement is therefore being revised to reflect these changes. The revised version will be available on line from April 2006.
