Pre-schools generally provide for children aged between three
and five years but some offer places to two-year-olds as
well.
They are open for up to 38 weeks per year during school
term time offering sessional care most mornings and some afternoons
for a minimum two-and-a-half hours but no more than four.
All children from the funding term following their third
birthday are entitled to 15 hours of
free early education per week for 38 weeks a year.
Most pre-schools are registered to provide places for up to 26
children with a minimum staff ratio of one adult for
every eight three to four-year-olds or one adult for every
four two-year-olds.
All pre-schools are inspected
by Ofsted with reports
available on its website.
