The aim of this scheme is to improve community
safety and reduce crime through an enhanced working relationship
between ourselves, schools and young people.
Our Schools Liaison team is based at Weston-super-Mare police
station and works within our Youth Offending Team.
It enables us to carry out preventative work with young people and
their parents across North Somerset.
Research has shown schools and their communities value police
involvement.
Their input is used to support teachers as part of the curriculum
and covers aspects of personal safety, illegal drugs, good
citizenship, security and crime prevention.
The topics offered to Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils include the
following subjects:
- Personal safety - Staying safe, bullying and harassment,
minority group issues, assaults, public orders and offensive
weapons
- Substance awareness - Drugs, volatile substances and
alcohol
- Property crime - Criminal damage and vandalism, theft, robbery
and burglary
- The law and you - Ages of responsibility and the rights and
role of the police
Avon and Somerset
Police also supports local education authorities in tackling
truancy through its Truancy Police as it recognises truants as
potential victims of crime and abuse as well as potential
offenders. |
