Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)

The Indices of Multiple Deprivation are the most detailed way of looking at where the most deprived areas across England are located.

Updated tables were published by Communities and Local Government in December 2007. In April 2004, information in the new format using super output areas, was published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

There are 124 super output areas in North Somerset and 32,482 across England.

In 2000, a study on deprivation was reported on at ward level, but smaller pockets of deprivation within a ward could be overlooked.

There are scores for each of the seven deprivation themes, which are called domains:

  • Barriers to housing and services
  • Crime
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Income
  • Living environment

The scores for each super output area were then ranked from 1 which is the most deprived, through to 32,482 which is the least deprived.

You can view the 2007 whole dataset at Communities and Local Government, and North Somerset's data and analysis for 2004.
