The Weston Civic Pride Initiative aims to encourage
economic regeneration and improve quality of life in
Weston-super-Mare by enhancing key buildings and public
spaces.
The improvements include creating pedestrian-friendly open
spaces, landmarks, street furniture, lighting, pedestrian and cycle
routes, and improved signage.
The new public spaces will host performances and events.
The £11m scheme will deliver 11 key projects over five
years.
The initiative is funded by a partnership which includes £2m
from North Somerset Council, £700,000 from
the Local
Transport Plan and £5m from the
South West of England
Regional Development Agency (SWRDA).
Funding also comes from the Weston Regeneration
Partnership, Weston Town
Council and private developments.
The first project started in September 2004 at Big Lamp Corner
with lighting, seating, new paving and trees installed at the
southern end of the pedestrianised section the High Street.
The second phase of improvements at Big Lamp Corner have
included the installation of the
Silica, a stunning 26-metre-high illuminated spire, which
houses public information, a kiosk and bus shelter.
There have also been improvements at the Grove Village area
around the Playhouse including improved traffic management and
street enhancements such as wider pavements.
Other Civic Pride Initiative plans include the
improvements at the following sites:
- Orchard Street
- Knightstone Island
- Weston gateway (highway improvements between Junction 21 and
the town centre)
- The Tropicana
- The Boulevard
- Pier Square and Regent Street
- The promenade
Signage improvements is another project which has
linked the enhanced public spaces and provides information.
