A double celebration takes place this Saturday
to mark the Potteries neighbourhood in
Weston-super-Mare.
The event, held by The South Ward Neighbourhood Management
Partnership, will celebrate the first of two Potteries clay
sculptures being installed as part of the South Ward Arts Strategy
(see www.southward.org.uk
for more information) as well as the newly completed mural
wall.
The sculpture, by artist Rod Harris, is a hexagon diatom,
representing the silica which makes up the famous clay deposits
found underneath the Potteries reminding us of the rich history of
the area when the Royal Pottery was in operation.
There is also a new mural on the wall at park which was
completed by young people involved within the youth offending
service and local children from the area. The mural was
finished in May and depicts the view of Weston-super-Mare seafront
from the sea, complete with the new pier.
Starting at noon on Saturday 14 August the event at
Millennium Green includes live music from MaƱana and Tom Conibear,
Nutty Noah doing an hour-long performance on stage, face painting,
clown capers, BBQ and snack van serving hot food and drinks, sports
activities for young people and Rod Harris will be on hand to talk
to local people about the sculpture and its significance.
The event is free admission and families are encouraged to come
along with rugs to sit on and enjoy this free event!
