A skate jam is being held at a refurbished skate park in
Weston-super-Mare next weekend.
Local skate and BMX group CONCRETE COMMUNITY are putting on
their first event at the skate plaza at Jubilee Park on Saturday 6
June.
The day starts at 11am when competitors can register and
practise for various skate and BMX competitions. Entry for
competitors is £2.
There will be prizes on offer for the highest ollie on a
skateboard and highest hop on a BMX, as well as prizes being given
out throughout the day for the best trick on the different
obstacles around the park. The prizes have been donated to
CONCRETE COMMUNITY by local skate and BMX companies and
distributors.
If you're new to the sport come along, have a go and get some
top tips and training from some of the group
members.
There will be burgers, hot dogs, bacon rolls and drinks
available on the day and music will make a friendly, chilled vibe,
ideal for spectators to come along and see some of the area's
finest skaters and riders in action.
The main competition starts at 1pm and there will a prize-giving
ceremony towards the end of the day.
CONCRETE COMMUNITY has worked closely with the South Ward
Neighbourhood Management Partnership and North Somerset Council to
design the new skate plaza and dirt jumps for the park. They have
worked with contractors on site to build the dirt jumps and helped
to design the equipment in the skate park. The group has also
successfully fundraised £11,000 to install railings to separate the
BMX track from the skate area and have also raised additional money
to put on the Skate Jam as an opening celebration for the new
park.
CONCRETE COMMUNITY holds meetings every month for anyone
interested in skateboarding or BMX riding. The next meeting
is on Sunday 7 June at 4pm at Barcode in
Weston-super-Mare.
