Firework safety

Date: 21/10/2008

TRADING standards officers are warning of the dangers of not handling fireworks carefully.

Fireworks can create breathtaking displays, but these explosives can also be deadly if not treated properly.

Residents are being urged to think about safety to make sure of a fun, accident free, fireworks night.

Fireworks should always be stored safely, away from flammable substances, electrical sources, children, animals and damp. Damp or poorly stored fireworks can be dangerous.

Those organising displays are also being asked to consider the space needed to set off fireworks. Many need a 25 metre (around 82 feet) clearance area – details will be on the packaging.

The welfare of animals should also be considered as they can be distressed by the noise and explosions caused by fireworks. Animals should be kept inside and neighbours should be told if you are planning a display.

For the same reason, fireworks should not be set off near fields containing livestock or horses and kept away from combustible items such as hay bales or dry leaves.

It is against the law to let off fireworks after 11pm. This extends to midnight on 5 November.

Fireworks should not be kept for longer than 21 days, otherwise you will need to register for safe storage.

Firework sales began on 15 October and the selling period runs until 10 November. Packs of fireworks cannot be split and sold individually and they are only available to over 18s. Only registered or licensed retailers can legally sell fireworks, so residents are urged to only buy from a legitimate source.

Trading standards officers inspect all retailers selling fireworks, but anyone with concerns about how fireworks are being stored should call 08454 040506.
