North Somerset residents can get their electric blankets
tested for free this month.
Our Trading Standards Service is carrying out two testing
sessions in conjunction with the Avonsafe partnership, the local
multi-agency injury prevention alliance.
The sessions will be held at Somerset Hall, The Precinct,
Portishead on Monday, 17 September and at the For All Healthy
Living Centre, Lonsdale Avenue, Weston-super-Mare on Wednesday, 26
September.
More than 1,000 fires a year in the UK are attributed to faulty
or damaged electric blankets, sometimes with fatal
consequences.
"Many of our older residents rely on their electric blankets for
additional warmth in winter, but they are often unaware of the
dangers that old and damaged electric blankets pose," said Cllr
Carl Francis-Pester, executive member responsible for consumer
protection.
"We would like residents to bring their blankets to be tested at
one of the two sessions. We are hoping to reduce the risks,
especially to the elderly, from fire caused by short circuits in
old or damaged items.
"It is also a good idea to follow some basic precautions if you
own an electric blanket, such as never using a blanket and a hot
water bottle at the same time and never using a blanket if there
are any ‘tell tale’ signs of damage such as scorch marks."
Testing at the two sessions will be carried out by prior
appointment only. Please call Trading Standards on 01934 634633 to
make a booking.
Some precautions for the use of electric blankets:
• Always buy new, not second-hand.
• Test regularly – at least every three years.
• Always follow manufacturers instructions for use.
• Don’t use a blanket with scorch marks or exposed
elements.
• Don’t use a blanket if it is wet or creased – don’t switch
it on to dry it out.
• Don’t use an electric blanket together with a hot water
bottle.
• Check the plug and cord for wear or damage.
• Don’t fit a blanket to a multi-adaptor with other electrical
items.
• Switch off and unplug when not in use.
• Never fold or crease the blanket.
• If it is over ten years old replace it.
• If in doubt, throw it out.
