Free electric blanket testing sessions will take place
on September 5 and 6 by North Somerset Council trading standards
officers, in conjunction with Avonsafe.
Many of North Somerset's older residents rely on their electric
blankets for additional warmth in winter, but they are often
unaware of the dangers that old and damaged electric blankets
pose.
More than 1000 fires a year in the UK are attributed to faulty
or damaged electric blankets, sometimes with fatal
consequences.
Councillor Deborah Yamanaka, executive member for environment
and community, said: "We would like residents to bring their
blankets to be tested at one of the two sessions. We are hoping to
reduce the risks, especially to the elderly, from fire caused by
short circuits in old or damaged items."
There are some basic precautions if you own an electric blanket
will be given, such as never using a blanket and a hot water bottle
at the same time or using the blanket if there are any ‘tell tail’
signs of damage such as scorch marks.
The testing sessions will be held on Tuesday 5 September at the
For All Healthy Living Centre, Lonsdale Avenue, Weston super Mare
and on Wednesday 6 September at Somerset Hall, 1 The Precinct,
Portishead.
To get your blanket tested you will need to make a prior
appointment. Contact North Somerset Council Trading Standards
