The support for ethnic minority achievement (EMA) is
currently managed in North Somerset primarily within the Vulnerable
Learners’ Service.
They have responsibility for providing cross-cluster support to
ensure that all ethnic minority children and their families,
including those with English as an additional language, are
supported appropriately within North Somerset‘s settings and
schools.
They are able to respond to schools and settings in the
following ways:
- Following direct referrals from schools and settings of
individual BME children for whom there are concerns, or referrals
via Cluster Leads
- As part of whole school capacity-building in relation to
ensuring the attainment of minority ethnic pupils.

- Support with school planning using audit tools based on
National Strategy programmes supporting Black heritage pupils, New
Arrivals and Advanced Bilingual Learners
- Support for school EMA Leader
- School-based INSET
- Pupil assessment, action planning and monitoring with school

- Inclusive classroom projects
