Ethnic Minority Achievement

The support for ethnic minority achievement (EMA) is currently managed in North Somerset primarily within the Vulnerable Learners’ Service.

They have responsibility for providing cross-cluster support to ensure that all ethnic minority children and their families, including those with English as an additional language, are supported appropriately within North Somerset‘s settings and schools.

They are able to respond to schools and settings in the following ways:

  1. Following direct referrals from schools and settings of individual BME children for whom there are concerns, or referrals via Cluster Leads
  2. As part of whole school capacity-building in relation to ensuring the attainment of minority ethnic pupils.

This strategic work will include:

  • Support with school planning using audit tools based on National Strategy programmes supporting Black heritage pupils, New Arrivals and Advanced Bilingual Learners
  • Support for school EMA Leader
  • School-based INSET
  • Pupil assessment, action planning and monitoring with school EMA Leader
  • Inclusive classroom projects
  • Inclusive curriculum development
    Pupil/student voice
    Parent/community partnerships
  • Planning and policy development
  • Specialist project work (by agreement with individual schools)
  • Services to partner agencies, schools and settings

Additional universal support includes:

  • Free access to the internationally renowned EMAS website: www.emas4success.org.  This provides online advice, resources and links
  • Central Training and EMA Network support sessions for school staff with responsibility, including ‘EMA Leaders’ and ‘EMA Teaching Assistants’ to develop in-school EMA work – to be confirmed
