We have a legal responsibility to eliminate gender
discrimination and harassment and promote equality between men and
women within North Somerset.
Under
the Equality
Act 2006, we have a Gender Equality Duty
(GED) which differs from our responsibilities under the Sex
Discrimination Act 1975.
It differs in that it requires us to take action
rather than wait for individuals to take action against inequality
and it requires us to promote gender equality and not to just
avoid discrimination.
Part of our GED also includes the need for us to produce a
three-year scheme to outline our gender equality goals
and actions.
As a result we have produced a
Gender Equality
Scheme using monitoring data, equality impact
assessments results and stakeholder consultation.
The scheme covers male and female gender equality issues and
outlines the following:
- How we will mainstream gender equality across our
services and employment opportunities
- How we will meet our legal duties in making gender
equality a reality
- How we will tackle gender inequality, eliminate discrimination
and promote equality of opportunity between genders - Including
transsexual people in terms of employment and vocational
training
- For full details of the scheme please download our
Gender Equality Scheme.
Copies are also available in other languages, large print,
Braille and in audio, electronic and other accessible
