Accessible information

We are legally required to ensure all the public information we provide is available in an accessible format.

The Equality Act 2010 (formerly the Disability Discrimination Act 1995) expects us, businesses and other organisation to offer a number of different formats to meet a variety of needs if it is reasonable and practical to do so.

Common examples of printed materials where alternatives would expected to be made available include the following:

  • Restaurant menus
  • Public exhibition leaflets
  • Leaflets which are always available and frequently used.

Common accessible formats used to fulfill this requirement include the following:

  • Audio tapes, CDs or MP3 files
  • Braille
  • Easy read text
  • Large print documents in 18-point fonts such as Ariel or Helvetica.

Our Accessible Information Guide (pdf, 2008, 417k) explains how we make sure information is presented in a way that suits your needs.

We also recommend the guide to other organisations for their own use.
