Equalities

We promote equality and freedom from discrimination for everyone in North Somerset.

We are committed to ensuring there is equality of opportunity for our residents irrespective of their status.

For further information about these commitments download our:
Comprehensive Equality Policy
(Comprehensive Equality Policy - Text version)
Race Equality Scheme 2007/10
Employee Ethnicity and Diversity Monitoring document.

Each of our equality schemes contain an action plan. The following documents are summaries of the progress made against each action plan to date and are regularly updated:
Gender Equality Scheme Actions
Disability Equality Scheme Actions
Race Equality Scheme Actions.

We adhere to the equality standard for local government laid down by the Commission for Racial Equality which states we must consider gender, race and disability equality issues at all levels of our policy and practice.

We give advice on access to buildings for local businesses and private developers.

We represent minority, excluded and disadvantaged groups working alongside the Somerset Racial Equality Council (SREC) and offer a racial harassment case work service with the charity Support Against Racist Incidents (SARI).

We also help provide support for individuals affected by homophobia by working alongside the charity Educational Action Challenging Homophobia (EACH) which runs a freephone helpline on 0808 100 0143.
